Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade

Watching the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade is a classic when it comes to celebrating on Thanksgiving day! Wake your house up with a special Thanksgiving breakfast, like any of these from The Pioneer Woman. Have fun watching the parade and have your kids spot their favorite characters!

Keep a gratitude jar

Make Thanksgiving a 365-day affair. Throughout the year, keep a gratitude jar of gestures you appreciate from family and friends you know you'll see in November. Pull out the jar post-dinner and share the gestures that warmed hearts.

Make a gratitude scavenger hunt

Asking kids point blank what they're grateful for might make them freeze up. Get their creative juices flowing by making it a game—have them find something in and around the house that represents various facets of gratitude. Something that makes a beautiful sound, something that makes them feel strong...the possibilities are endless and a great conversation starter!

Let the kids serve dessert.

Why should adults have all the fun? Get your kids in on the action by inviting them to serve dessert. Better yet, let them help make a pie and serve their own tasty creations (alongside more professional offerings, too, of course).

Do a Thanksgiving craft

Thanksgiving Crafts are a fun way to celebrate the Thanksgiving season throughout the whole month of November.  A cute craft we’ve loved for years is creating hand-print turkey pillows that can be used for years. It’s an easy craft that can be done with a wind range of ages.

Supplies

  • Red, Orange, Yellow, Green, Blue, and Brown Paint
  • Googly eyes
  • Plain white/ivory pillow (cover), like this or this
  • Pillow trim of choice, we like brown, orange, or dark green pom pom
  • Half-Dozen egg carton
  • 5 Spongy Paint Brushes, 1 small brush (for details)

How To:

Step one - Divide paint between each egg carton
Step two - Paint palm and thumb brown, paint each finger a different color (excluding red)
Step three - Gently press your child's hand onto the fabric. Hold for 5-10 seconds, pressing each finger down to endure paint transfer. Gently remove hand, being sure not to smear.
Step four - Paint legs, beaks and wattle. Glue googly eye and trim
Step five - Let dry and display!
*Tip: Use a sharpie to write the year at the top (or on the back) and repeat the process with each of your children. Watch as they grow each year!

Watch a classic holiday movie.

After Thanksgiving dinner, kick off the Christmas season with your family's favorite Christmas movie. Better yet, make it a marathon! Munch on your Thanksgiving leftovers, cuddle under only the coziest of blankets, and play the Christmas movie classics. The joy and nostalgia of Christmas movies inspire us to create and maintain holiday traditions with our own families. We wanted to highlight the traditions, keepsakes, and nostalgia that our favorite Christmas movies have to offer.  Let us know, what are your favorite Christmas movies? Do you like light-hearted and funny movies like Elf or Home Alone or heart-warming, meaningful movies like It’s A Wonderful Life or A Charlie Brown Christmas.

Take a trip to the tree farm

If you haven’t already put your tree up, get outside after that epic Thanksgiving dinner and kick off the Christmas season with a trip to a nearby Christmas tree farm.
