The Proper Way to Monogram

At Ann + Reeves Kids, we believe a monogram makes everything more special. From classic baby bubbles to backpacks and blankets, we can monogram anything—and we mean anything. Whether you love a traditional look or a modern take, knowing the proper way to monogram ensures each piece is timeless and personal.

What Is a Monogram?

A monogram is a set of initials that represent a person’s name, arranged in a decorative order. It’s one of the most elegant ways to personalize an item, and it has been used for centuries to mark ownership, celebrate milestones, and add a touch of personality to everyday pieces.

The Traditional Monogram Order

The most common monogram style uses three letters. The order depends on the person or couple being represented.

For an individual:

  • Traditional (most common): First Name Initial – Last Name Initial – Middle Name Initial

    • Example: Mary Elizabeth Thompson → M T E
The larger center initial represents the last name

  • Block or Straight Monogram: First Name Initial – Middle Name Initial – Last Name Initial

    • Example: Mary Elizabeth Thompson → M E T
In this style, all letters are the same size, creating a clean, modern look.

For a couple:

  • Married Couple Monogram: Her First Initial – Shared Last Initial – His First Initial

    • Example: Anna and William Parker → A P W
This style is classic for linens, wedding gifts, and home items.

Choosing the Right Font and Style

The beauty of a monogram is that it can reflect personality. Script fonts are timeless and elegant, perfect for heirloom pieces and baby gifts. Block fonts feel crisp and contemporary, ideal for boys’ clothing or school gear. At Ann + Reeves Kids, we offer a range of monogram styles so you can find one that fits your taste perfectly.

Where to Place a Monogram

Monogram placement can transform a simple item into something truly special. Here are a few of our favorites:

  • Clothing: Chest, pocket, or collar

  • Bags and Backpacks: Front flap or corner

  • Blankets and Towels: Lower corner for a balanced look

  • Accessories: Bibs, burp cloths, hats, and more—there’s no limit to what can be monogrammed

When in Doubt, Keep It Classic

Trends come and go, but a proper monogram never goes out of style. We recommend using traditional order and timeless fonts for keepsakes you’ll treasure for years to come.

At Ann + Reeves Kids, every monogram is stitched with care and attention to detail. Whether you’re welcoming a new baby, celebrating a milestone, or adding a personal touch to a favorite piece, we’re here to help make it uniquely yours.

We can monogram anything—and we can’t wait to personalize something special for you.
